The Local Government Training Group was established in 1993 and is responsible to the Staff Commission. The Training Group meets five times a year, under the chairmanship of one of the SOLACE representatives who serves a two-year term. The current chairman is Norman Dunn, Chief Executive of Newtownabbey Borough Council.
In 1994 the Training Group was designated as a Specified Body, which enables it to have its expenditure defrayed by the Department of the Environment through deductions from the general grant payable to the councils. Each council thereby makes a financial contribution to the Training Group in proportion to the net rateable value of its district. The total contribution for the 2005-06 financial year is £195,000.
