Advanced Diploma in Management Practice - Local Government

Background

The Diploma in Management Practice was launched in response to a need for a management development initiative targeted specifically at middle/senior managers in local government and smaller public bodies. Since its inception, the University of Ulster has delivered the DMP as bespoke programmes for public and private sector organisations.

The outstanding success of the DMP is reflected in its re-launch as the Advanced Diploma in Management Practice. This is due to the high quality input, its modular design and the content that covers key managerial issues. The emphasis is on improving managerial performance by exposing managers to leading edge theories, models and frameworks and, critically, demonstrating how these managerial tools and techniques inform practice. It is therefore competency based and has as its main focus behavioural change in the workplace that will result in enhanced business capability. To maximise the opportunity of transfer of learning participants carry out an in-house assignment at the end of each module. This normally takes the form of a report with recommendations for improvement with regard to a particular aspect of managing the business. It is this emphasis on the practice of management within the context of the organisation that distinguishes Advanced Diploma in Management Practice as a business development initiative.

The Advanced Diploma in Management Practice is structured to accommodate the needs of local government and smaller public bodies.

Please note that there are now six modules, with each being based around a two-day workshop, and there are no action learning sets.  The Induction and Project Presentation days remain as before at each end of the programme.

As for costs, councils will pay £972 per participant (and the LGTG will contribute £360), reflecting a 2.3% increase in the fees charged by the University.
