Domestic Violence: Raising Awareness in the Workplace - Tuesday 28 March 2006

As part of the Women in Local Councils Initiative we are encouraging councils to attend the Domestic Violence: Raising Awareness in the Workplace seminar to be held on Tuesday 28 March 2006. The event is being organised by Opportunity Now and sponsored by the Northern Ireland Court Service.

The Government has nominated March 2006 as national Domestic Violence Month. In Northern Ireland Opportunity Now is working in partnership with the NI Court Service, Women's Aid, the Irish Congress of Trade Unions and the PSNI to raise awareness among employers of the impact of domestic violence.

The event will include a series of presentations from each of these organisations and also feature a presentation by South and East Belfast Health and Social Services Trust, who have gained wide recognition for their Workplace Domestic Abuse Support Service initiative.

In recognition that domestic violence costs the Northern Ireland economy £180 million each year, the Department of Health Social Services and Public Safety and the Northern Ireland Office will inform delegates of government guidelines for developing workplace policies on domestic violence and abuse.
