Preparing for Age Discrimination Legislation

Legislation in relation to age discrimination will take effect from 1 October 2006. This seminar looked in detail at the regulations and the implications for the local government employers.  Including:

• Advertising and Recruitment
• The right to request to work beyond retirement
• Assessing the fitness of older workers' ability to work beyond retirement age
• Terms and conditions of employment

There was an opportunity to hear a case study from Green Park Healthcare Trust who have taken a positive approach and embraced age diversity.

Preparing for Age Discrimination Follow-Up

The Equality Commission is currently consulting on a Draft Age Guidance Pack.

We are planning to hold a seminar on Wednesday 30 August (10.30 am to 12.30 pm in Commission House) to follow-up on any issues from the age seminar in June.  Simon Hookham from the Equality Commission will outline the age guidance pack and Michelle Morris also from the Equality Commission will answer any queries on implementing the legislation.

We could then take your comments and formulate a joint response on behalf of local government.

On behalf of the Equality Commission we have sent copies of the Draft Age Guidance Pack to each Council.  It is also available on the ECNI website.  The consultation closes on 11 September 2006.
