A SINGLE EQUALITY BILL

Exploring the options to harmonise, update and extend anti-discrimination and equality legislation in Northern Ireland

MONDAY 6 SEPTEMBER 2004, 10.30am – 12.15pm

To be held in the Offices of the NI Commissioner for Children and Young People, Millennium House, 17-25 Great Victoria Street, Belfast

In June 2004 the Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister (OFMDFM) issued for consultation a discussion paper entitled A single Equality Bill for Northern Ireland.

The single Equality Bill will bring together all the provisions contained in existing legislation and update and extend those provisions where appropriate.

The consultation document sets out options on the main issues that need to be considered in developing a single Equality Bill for Northern Ireland.

At a recent Statutory Duty Network meeting it was agreed that an awareness session for local government would inform the debate and highlight the implications for councils. The Staff Commission will then facilitate a joint response to the consultation on behalf of local government.

Speakers will include representatives from the Single Equality Team (OFMDFM), Barry Fitzpatrick, Equality Commission NI and Damien McMahon, Derry City Council.

This event will be relevant to Equality Officers, HR Professionals, legal representatives and any Officers with responsibility for policy development.

A copy of the consultation document and the response booklet are available from the OFMDFM website at www.ofmdfmni.gov.uk/equality
