The launch of the Disability Action Plan for local government, which will be held at 11.30am on Wednesday 22 June 2005 in Equality House, 7/9 Shaftesbury Square, Belfast.

The Local Government Staff Commission for Northern Ireland, in partnership with the Equality Commission and a number of councils, have worked together to develop a disability focused Action Plan for local government.

Of the 300,000 people with disabilities in Northern Ireland, 200,000 are of working age. Local government is not only an employer and a service provider, but also has a community development role. Improving the employment prospects of members of the community who are disabled has a positive impact on the community as a whole.

Councils are already developing innovative and pro-active employment initiatives for disabled people and are starting to anticipate and initiate reasonable adjustments in all aspects of their recruitment and employment practice.

The launch of the Disability Action Plan will highlight how councils are ensuring that their employment policies and practices promote equality for disabled people and comply with existing equality legislation.

This event is aimed at Chief Executives, Elected Members, Human Resources Managers and those with responsibility for equality. There are 4 places available for your Council and it is suggested that an appropriate mix would be 2 members and 2 officers.
